IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOEL BYRNE
The Let Goodness Shine foundation was founded shortly afterthe sudden passing of Joel Byrne from SUDC at the age of 15.This foundation is an opportunity for us to celebrate the life of Joel, his goodness and amplify his legacy.
We believe that Joel’s life provides a light to others. Through LetGoodness Shine, we will strive to relentlessly serve the less fortunate and advocate for the unheard and unseen through existing, “grassroot” nonprofits.
We consider Joel to be the foundation’s founder — his example, principals, and priorities are our blueprint. His sense of purpose stemmed from his strong faith and was his driver for compassion for the less fortunate. Joel didn’t lose his life, he lived his life — as anathlete, a defender, a man of faith — he lived it with purpose and did good.
“No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.”
— Matthew 5:15 (NLT)
He was Gifted … Whether it was basketball, football, soccer or whatever, Joel naturally excelled. He had the physical gifts, but more importantly, he had the heart of a competitor who never sought the spotlight. He played for the team, for the game, and for the glory of the one who gave him the talent.
As parents, we were happy for him that he could excel in sports. But what truly filled our hearts were the quiet moments—the times he picked up litter when no one was watching, the way he treated the "starfish" on the beach of life. He understood that goodness isn't just in the grand gestures, but in the small, consistent choices to leave the world better than he found it.
Joel was one of the best defenders in basketball I have ever seen. His defensive stance was a statement: "You shall not pass." This translated off the court too. He was a defender of the weak, a defender of his friends, and a defender of his values. He stood his ground with a quiet strength that commanded respect without ever demanding it.
The underlying source of what made Joel, Joel, came from in his faith in Jesus Christ. It was the compass for his character. Like Roberto Clemente, whom he admired, Joel saw his platform as a way to serve others. His Bible wasn't just a book on a shelf; it was a manual for a life of purpose, etched into his daily actions and his unwavering kindness.
I think there is something fathers enjoy about forcing their kids to listen or watch something educational. We'd listen to Rick Warren together, discussing what it means to live a driven, purposeful life. Joel took those lessons to heart. He knew that his time was a gift and that his legacy wouldn't be measured by years, but by the light he shared while he was here.
